AutumnColor Digital Imaging of Worcester, MA has Completed Scanning Images for Photographer Eric Meola's Book on Rocker Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run

350 Or So Hours Later…

AutumnColor Digital Imaging of Worcester, MA has completed scanning images for photographer Eric Meola's book on rocker Bruce Springsteen, "Born to Run: The Unseen Photos."

The book, slated for publication this fall, contains never-before-seen photos of the rock icon taken 30 years ago, when Meola shot the cover of Springsteen’s breakthrough "Born to Run" album. The vinyl disk is being remastered and re-released this year on CD.

AutumnColor works with commercial and fine-art photographers. Creating scans of their images for books, posters and other projects is but one of the many services that this multi-faceted company performs for these and other professionals.

Meola wanted the company to reproduce his Springsteen images as 16-bit grayscale scans, a process requiring the creation of huge 2.2-gigabyte files for each strip of Meola's 19 rolls of 36-exposure film. “350 or so hours later,” announced AutumnColor owner Mark Doyle of Leominster, “the project was complete.”

"I wanted something that was nearly impossible to print, but beautiful to look at if printed perfectly," Meola said.

To create the 16-bit grayscale photo scans he wanted for his book, Meola arranged for Doyle to borrow a $50,000 Kodak Creo EverSmart Supreme II high-end flat-bed scanner directly from Kodak.

Doyle had to set up the scanner and learn its software before he could get going on the job, but was pleased with the machine’s ability to reproduce deep shadows, which really brought out the details of Meola’s work. “There was certainly a huge hurdle to overcome, with the challenge of using a new scanner and software that I was not familiar with, but I saw this as a way to learn new things in the digital world,” he said. “Eric was counting on me to help him reach his goal…and with the help of the Creo technicians, we produced some really beautiful scans.”

The end results are master scans, good for anything Meola wants to do with them in the future.

“We got to see images that no one in the public has ever seen before,” Doyle said, “…and that was the coolest part of the job!”
