Fotki Inc. Puts Forward a Cool Ability to Browse Photo Albums with FotkiMaps and Browse Earth with Fotki Albums

27 November 2005

Fotki.com, a media social network specializing in photo sharing has also become a geoweb by having announced a new era in geotagging and browsing photo albums. Geocoded albums are all present on the FotkiMaps powered by Google Maps. Now it is possible to literally travel around the Earth with Fotki albums.
Having started with photo-session location feature allowing incorporating location-based references into albums and photos, Fotki quickly came to the idea of integrating geotagged albums on a large interactive map. A nifty tool, FotkiMaps, was developed due to the power of Google's publicly available Maps API and has become the most fun means to digest the entire photo collection. All albums stored by location are seen as a picturesque network of photographer's travels allowing a viewer to experience as if following them: albums' placemarks are located on aerial and satellite images and combined with FotkiMaps with a click.
One can just find on the map the place where photos were taken and click on it to link an album to latitude and longitude on the Earth. On the FotkiMaps, a geotag stands for the album or the entire list of albums connected with this tag. Albums' owner can easily handle and manage any number of geotags through a unified Location Manager.
Everybody visiting online albums on Fotki can click a map button to open FotkiMaps and to view albums seamlessly integrated with scrollable and zoomable Google Maps. Geocoding, Geolocation, Geotagging and Geoblogging becoming common notions for a digital photographer and making much sense for him add plenty of advantages to photo sharing and media social networking.
People travel quite a lot and have many shots that are grouped into "road trip"- or "travel-route"-type albums - albums that are not taken at any one location but spread out over sometimes hundreds of miles. Same goes with subject-type albums: say, an album may contain photos of waterfalls or monuments taken all over a country. It is really great to have each album individually labeled with theme geotags and to see them all exposed on the map.
"We are really excited about this cool new Fotki capability," says Dmitri Don, President of Fotki. "The new feature makes Fotki a better tool for anyone who travels a lot, for the kind of people that we are proud to call our users: worldly, social, active people whose oyster is the whole world, so to say! We are always working to make sure that Fotki is the best place for such awesome people!"
