Global shipments of Japanese digital cameras to rise 20.8 pct in 200531 January 2005
Global shipments of Japanese-made digital cameras are expected to increase by 20.8 pct to about 72.2 mln units this year, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, citing an estimate by the Camera & Imaging Products Association.
Exports will account for almost all the increase, in a continuation of 2004 sales trends, the business daily reported.
While domestic shipments are expected to rise only 1.8 pct to 8.7 mln units in 2005, overseas shipments are forecast to surge 24 pct to 63.5 mln units, with particularly brisk sales expected in European and Asian markets, the report said.
In 2004, global shipments totaled 59.76 mln units, up 37.7 pct from 2003. Exports soared 46.5 pct to 51.21 mln units, while domestic shipments rose 1.3 pct to 8.54 mln units, the first single-digit increase since 1999 when such statistics were first recorded, the Nikkei (news) said. As for film cameras, global shipments are estimated to decline 36.5 pct to 6.4 mln units, due to the popularity of digital cameras.
In 2004, a total of 10.08 mln film cameras were shipped, a decrease of 38.2 pct. Shipments of film single-lens reflex cameras totaled 1.19 mln units, down 48.9 pct, the report said.
