MultiVu Video Feed: Bausch & Lomb Global Recall of Popular Contact Lens Solution16 May 2006
STORY SUMMARY:
Bausch & Lomb is removing its Renu with MoistureLoc contact lens cleaner from all markets globally, saying the solution's formula may increase the risk of a potentially blinding infection called fusarium fungal disorder. Nearly 30 million Americans wear contacts, and one in four use Bausch & Lomb's products to clean their lenses. The fungus causes severe corneal infections that, left untreated, can lead to permanent vision loss. Symptoms include sudden blurred vision, unusual redness and pain in the eye, excessive tearing or discharge from the eyes or increased sensitivity to light.
The decision to remove the product from the marketplace comes after reports by health officials in Hong Kong, Singapore and the U.S. that MoistureLoc was used by the majority of contact lens wearers who became infected. The number of Americans confirmed to have the potentially blinding eye infection was 122 on May 12, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition to the confirmed cases, 75 reports are now considered possible or are still under review.
