OmniVision Starts Volume Production of New VGA and 1.3 Megapixel CameraChips16 February 2006
OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVTI), a world leading supplier of CMOS image sensors, today at the 3GSM World Congress announced that it has started volume production and shipments of its OV7670 VGA and OV9655 1.3 megapixel CameraChips. Both image sensors have achieved a high level of customer interest in recent months and are now shipping in volume to several major handset producers. Earlier this month, the OV7670 VGA sensor drew attention when it was announced that this CameraChip enabled the manufacture of ultra-thin handsets. Customers have already begun to take advantage of this newly designed, high-performance VGA sensor, which measures just 6 x 6 x 4.1mm. The OV9655, introduced in the second half of 2005, is a newly improved, feature-rich 1/4 inch, 1.3 megapixel CameraChip with LCD scaler and enhanced image processing. It is currently considered the best performing 1.3 megapixel mobile imager available in volume. Since its introduction, the OV9655 has been designed into numerous new handset designs that are expected to hit the market beginning this month and continuing throughout the rest of the year.
