Inside Business, a weekly business journal covering Hampton Roads, Va., started this award as a way to recognize women who have made a significant impact on the business community and local economy and have served as mentors and examples to others. The winners were profiled in a special issue of the publication and honored at a luncheon on Dec. 5 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

In her current position, Stewart leads thousands of employees who build and maintain some of the most complex machines in the world - nuclear-powered attack submarines. She oversees construction of the new Virginia-class submarines and planning and engineering services for the Navy's Seawolf and Los Angeles-class submarines. Stewart joined Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector in 1982 as a technical planner and has held positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of ship repair, life cycle engineering, strategic planning and computer administration and control.

A life-long resident of Hampton Roads, Stewart is active in the community and has served on the board of directors for several organizations, including AMSEC LLC, the South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers and the Center for Advanced Ship Repair and Maintenance. She served as a career coach for the College of William and Mary's master's of business administration program and mentors employees at Northrop Grumman Newport News.

Northrop Grumman Newport News, headquartered in Newport News, Va., is the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two companies capable of designing and building nuclear-powered submarines. Newport News also provides after-market services for a wide array of naval and commercial vessels. The Newport News sector employs about 19,000 people.
