Sony claims that the monitor is the sharpest and brightest video monitor for the medical market. The LMD-1950MD features a high-quality 1280 x 1024 panel with 700+ lines of video resolution, 1.4 times greater than competitive monitors. The display screen measures 19.1 inches (viewable area measured diagonally).

According to Ben Stluka, Medical Sales Manager, «The new monitor also incorporates a new 10-bit digital signal processor that provides smooth, natural gradations; accurate color reproduction; and consistent color temperature throughout the gray scale.» Stluka further notes that, «This is a significant improvement over conventional monitors which all use an 8-bit LCD. Those competitive monitors exhibit color shifts and have difficulty maintaining consistent color temperature.»

The new monitor replaces Sony's CRT technology in critical medical applications such as endoscopy, operating rooms, C-Arms, ultrasound, cardiac imaging, radiology, and other advanced medical imaging applications. To achieve peak performance in these critical applications, Sony's new monitor, unlike competitive monitors, is completely sealed with no air vents to prevent matter from entering or exiting the unit. The front panel incorporates membrane switches, which makes it easy to clean. The unit is further encased with a steel back panel that provides protection during movement on surgical arms.

The new display integrates seamlessly with surgical arms. Inputs include: composite, S-Video, RGB, Component, DVI-D, and optional SD and HDSDI inputs. The display features Sony's patented X-Algorithm signal processing technology, which combines the pixels above, below, and in the diagonal direction of the moving image. This ensures the most suitable conversion of interlaced to progressive images by detecting the strongest correlation between adjoining pixels for a new interpolated pixel calculation. As a result, the user experiences far superior picture performance.

Competitive monitors typically interlace signals on a progressive LCD pixel array by combining two adjacent picture fields. This greatly reduces the image quality of moving images.

The monitor's viewing surface, a bright LCD panel with a 5:4 aspect ratio, features a robust Anti-Reflection (AR) -- coated multi-layer protection. The AR coating minimizes damage caused by accidental scratching and reduces light reflection to a minimum. When used in bright lighting conditions, high contrast is maintained, even in dark areas of the image. The panel features a contrast ratio of 600:1.

The LMD-1950MD monitor includes Sony's exclusive IzzitOn™ system, a built-in tally light that provides visual confirmation to the surgeon that the recorder is engaged. This feature is compatible with the Sony DVO-1000MD medical-grade DVD recorder, also carried by Scientific Vision Systems.
